List of Conditions We Treat

1.

Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

In the days and weeks following birth, postpartum conditions such as postpartum anxiety or depression, can dampen the joy and enthusiasm of bringing new life into the world. Women who miscarry can also experience postpartum conditions, in addition to grieving for their lost child.

Postpartum conditions are extremely common. Up to 80% of women experience some type of mood disturbance after giving birth, with symptoms including fatigue, sadness, anxiety, and distress. This can sometimes be referred to as the “baby blues” and symptoms are often mild and begin and end within 3-5 days of delivery.

But 10-20% of mothers experience more significant, long-term symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, which can be treated with therapy and/or medication. At Elite DNA Behavioral Health, we recognize the seriousness of postpartum depression and anxiety. We know there’s more to it than just being sad after giving birth, our Founder & CEO experienced it after the birth of each of her three sons. Read her story and if it seems familiar to you, contact us. It’s okay to ask for help!

Anxiety & Depression

Experiencing anxiety and depression all at once can bring your life to a grinding halt. Either condition on its own can inhibit your ability to think, feel, and function in a healthy manner. The most common types of anxiety include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Panic Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Social Anxiety Disorders. The most common types of depression are Major Depression, Persistent Depressive Disorder, Postpartum Depression (PPD), and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

The two types of conditions are very often intertwined for our clients. Anxiety can be a symptom of depression or vice versa; when you consider the full range of symptoms of these mental health conditions, you can see how closely related they are. And how common. The American Psychiatric Association estimates that one in every six individuals will experience depression in their lifetimes. Anxiety and depression can have many root causes — physical, emotional, and/or environmental. Which is why we take a holistic approach to developing your treatment plan – we look at everything such as your sleeping habits, lifestyle, and what your body and mind are experiencing. Our mental health professionals can address each of these areas with therapy and psychiatry and, as needed, with medication.

Family Conflicts

A difficult economic period in your family’s life, a major transition to cope with, the grief of losing a loved one…these are just a few of the instances where conflict can arise in your family, and you may benefit from psychotherapy and psychiatry services. Ideally, when there is conflict in the family, a treatment plan will include all members of the family involved in the conflict. Nevertheless, if there is dysfunction in your family, and you are the only family member seeking help, we can provide support to you with tools to use in your day-to-day living.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a serious mental health condition that is often mischaracterized by stereotypes. OCD causes you to have unwanted and intrusive thoughts that cause an obsession, which result in the need to do repetitive behaviors, or compulsions. Clients with OCD feel that if they do not perform certain obsessive tasks, disaster will result. What does result is stress. If these habits or thoughts take up at least an hour a day, are beyond your control, aren’t enjoyable, or interfere with your daily life, it could be time to seek help. Two common symptoms of OCD are intrusive thoughts and contamination. With intrusive thoughts you think constantly about something that might never occur to another person. Contamination is a fear of things that might be dirty or a compulsive need to clean, which often stems from intrusive thoughts. An example is thinking about the germs on a doorknob. With OCD, you could fixate on the number of germs on the doorknob, not able to touch or turn it until you have performed a ritual like cleaning it several times, whereas someone without OCD may simply walk up to the door and touch the knob to open it. Once you complete the action, you may feel a small bit of relief. But most likely, you will experience this again at one point of your day. An obsessive thought turns into anxiety, you do the action, then feel a brief reprieve from anxiety, and then the cycle continues. One or any combination of psychotherapies can help, although talk therapy alone is not always successful. You may need to have medication prescribed and managed by a psychiatrist. At Elite DNA Behavioral Health, both types of mental health professionals are on staff, making cross-collaboration easy and convenient for you.

Insomnia

Sleep challenges often accompany other mental health conditions. A lack of sleep, or poor-quality sleep can result in anxiety, depression, and impaired function when you are awake. Worrying about your sleep challenges may affect your ability to fall asleep and you may then find yourself in a pattern of anxiety and poor sleep that requires intervention. Sleep challenges are quite common, with one estimate putting the number of adults in the United States living with sleep challenges at 70 million. There are approximately 80 different types of sleep disorders: insomnia being the most common. If you are having trouble sleeping, our mental health professionals can help you determine the cause of your sleeplessness and craft a treatment plan to address your concerns.

Sometimes this dissatisfaction is so significant that it can influence your daily life. In many individuals, gender dysphoria can contribute to feelings of depression or anxiety.

7.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

A mental health condition that you may develop in response to a traumatic event, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often causes symptoms such as avoidance, severe anxiety, and flashbacks. Combat exposure, childhood abuse, sexual violence, physical assault, and many other situations can cause PTSD. Even though you cannot change the fact that the trauma occurred, we can help you reduce the resulting symptoms. Because most people who live with PTSD also live with additional mental health conditions like anxiety or depression, it’s important that you are evaluated for them as well and receive comprehensive treatment. Our psychiatrists and medical team at Elite DNA Behavioral Health will do an evaluation to determine if you are experiencing PTSD. The primary treatment for PTSD is psychotherapy but can also include medication. Types of Psychotherapy that are beneficial for PTSD include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Exposure therapy, and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). We have many therapists who specialize in these areas and offer the SHIFT Trauma Therapy Program at our home office, a safe and neutral space to receive treatment for PTSD.
